What’s it’s like to join the Marshfield Male Voice Choir?

We meet every Monday 7.30-9.30pm, except during a summer break at the Marshfield Chapel in Marshfield High Street. Most of us are from Marshfield and the surrounding villages and came into the choir with little or no experience. Over 10 years and with the help of several very capable musical directors we have reached a good standard and will always strive for better.

We have around 20 regularly attending, conducted by our new Musical Director Luana Godwin and supported by our incredibly capable Accompanist Sarah Bartlett. We aim for around 3 or 4 performances a year and very occasionally venture into competitions but don’t let that put you off, its not as scary as it sounds. Recently we have sung at Dyrham House NT and with the Military Wives Choir of Wootten Bassett. We also enjoy singing with other choirs including our friends the Mathern Choir just over the bridge in Wales.

We sing a wide range of songs from traditional male voice choir to choral to more contemporary numbers, see our music for examples. All music sheets are supplied and sometimes audio files to practise with. Most of us don’t sight read music. Practice, repetition and capable direction gets songs to performance standard, along with some additional sectional rehearsals.

As a community choir we accept all new members (we don’t hold tests or auditions) and will help you to find your natural range in bass, baritone, second tenor or top tenor. Each section has four of 5 members and will aid you finding your feet and voice!

Costs work out at £5 per night to cover expenses such as buying music, hire of the chapel and professional costs of our Director, currently collected at the beginning of each term.

Please do get in touch if you would like join the choir or come and sing with us for a couple of weeks to see if this is for you. We’ll promise a friendly welcome and all the support and encouragement we can.
